Square Enix received a lot of negative feedback when it first announced that Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters would be for smartphones and PCs, not consoles. Fortunately, the team saw the light and decided to release them on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster producer Naofumi Takuma said in a new interview that they initially thought it would be a straightforward performance with the PC versions of the games. to port them to consoles, but that doesn’t seem to have been the case. Takuma says they encountered obstacles that required more optimization than they thought, but at the end of the day the optimization they introduced “made things a lot faster.” You can read the entire interview here.
Were there any particular challenges with the Switch and PS4 versions of the games that the team didn’t face with the PC and mobile adaptations of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster?
Takuma: It’s rare to create a console version when a PC version already exists, and we expected that using the PC version as a base wouldn’t be too much of a problem, but when we ported the games, we encountered some obstacles including long load times and dropout processing, which required more adjustments than we expected. In the end, I think the optimization speeded things up a lot.
