In a recent interview with Famitsu, producers Masaru Oyamada, Shinichi Tatsuke and developer Naofumi Takuma Square Enix talked a little bit about the app changes in boss battles in the new Trials of Mana

Shinichi Tatsuke: The planners thought of the ideas for the bosses, and Takuma took a holistic direction for those ideas. Thanks to the hard work of planners, the game has a new kind of appeal with all of these boss patterns.
Masaru Oyamada: Even bosses who stayed in fixed positions in the original game are moving into battle areas for the full remake version. It was a lot of work making sure we didn't mess up his image. The shape of the Benevodons follows the original version, but its features have been further enhanced through action, so check it out.
