Suda51 is known for being the founder and CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio known for the No More Heroes games. When Suda51 is not working in video games, it is quite common to see him being interviewed by various media outlets about video games, and the topics of conversation can vary.
For example, in a new interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Suda51 commented on the Metacritic scores. He helped that “everyone pays too much attention to Metacritic ratings and cares too much about them. It’s gotten to the point where there’s almost a certain formula – if you want to get a high score on Metacritic, this is how you make a game”. He explained that he feels that games that don’t fit that formula and/or “marketability scope” lose points on Metacritic, which is something bigger companies might not want to deal with. He also notes that this may not be the main reason why he thinks everyone cares too much about Metacritic scores, but it’s “certainly one reason why.”
He’s not done talking about it yet. In fact, he concluded by saying that “I personally don’t care too much about Metacritic numbers. I’m not really aware of them. What’s important to us is putting out the games we want to put out and having people play the games we want them to be able to play.” He admits to occasionally checking Metacritic scores, especially when Grasshopper Manufacture releases a new game. However, he says that “other than that I try to avoid Metacritic”.
