Video game preservation site Forest of Illusion has a nice surprise for Nintendo fans because they have provided prototype for Super Mario (USA) and not only did they feature it, but they released it for fans to enjoy. The prototype is from October 25, 1990, which is before the iconic Super Nintendo game hit retail shelves across the United States. Super Mario World (USA) has some different dialogs, visual changes, with lots of additional debugging features. Since th is is a localized prototype, there are plenty of debugging options to play with. For example, you can walk with Mario around the map and choose which stage to play on, Mario can’t die so you don’t have to worry about 1Ups, and you can choose any power-up you want to use at any time. Here is a video
Differences:
- The sign on Yoshi’s house has different shading and lettering.
- The text box font is much thinner than the retail version.
- Numerous differences in the script.
- Donut Plains 2, Donut Secret House and “Funky” correspond to the Japanese version.
- Star Road stages lead to various test stages.
- Mario will not die after the time runs out.
- Various debugging features are provided.
- In the staff list, Boo Buddies and Big Boo are referred to as Boo Diddly and Boo Jackson.
