SEGA is pleased to announce that Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a co-production with its American subsidiary SEGA of America, Inc. (hereafter SEGA of America) and Paramount Pictures Corporation (hereafter Paramount Pictures), recorded a global box office of $425 million, surpassing the previous film's record of $405 million. The fourth installment of the film franchise is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 19, 2027 by Paramount Pictures.
The “Sonic the Hedgehog” series, a Hollywood film adaptation of SEGA's popular game series, tells the story of Sonic, the world's fastest hedgehog, who embarks on adventures in a new environment on Earth. The previous film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released in 2022, the mysterious dark hero Shadow makes his film debut, his story set against the colorful backdrop of Tokyo. The film brings the most expansive and supersonic action sequences in the series so far.
The film was shown in the US on December 20 last year, and in its first three days (from December 20 to 22) it recorded an income of 60.1 million dollars at the box office and debuted in the first place. Internationally, the film had the biggest opening in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It debuted at No. 1 in over 30 markets, including the UK, Mexico, Italy, Australia, Poland, Malaysia, UAE, Turkey, the Philippines, Panama and Argentina.
It is now also in cinemas in Japan. It was released on December 27 last year and has already earned more than 188.2 million yen, surpassing the previous film's box office earnings of 234 million yen and setting a record for the series in Japan.
The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise recently surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings across its three films.
