The Legend of Bum-Bo is a kind of spin-off for The Binding of Isaac with puzzle-like RPG mechanics.
Recently, its developer, Edmund McMillen, has been interviewed by Gamasutra and has answered interesting questions about the title. Among the questions he has answered is the sources of inspiration for the title.
In this regard, McMillen has said the following:
It’s mostly a combination of games like Puzzle Quest and Plants Vs. Zombies, both of which were taken in a way to make it feel like we were looking at something fresh and new. I took that foundation and pushed Isaac as much as I could on the resource structure, theme, and RNG elements. … The mechanics came from a lot of trial and error when trying to make a dungeon crawler and a game [que podría] give us the same feeling as Magic: The Gathering ”.
