It was expected that the movie Super Mario Bros. hit $1 billion in global box office sales and looks set to hit that milestone by the end of the weekend.
According to a new update from Rok, the Universal, Illumination and Nintendo film will surpass the $1 billion mark by Sunday, making it the first film of 2023 to reach the mark. If everything goes according to plan, it will only take 26 days.
The film reached around $970 million overseas on Friday, and the film’s launch in markets like Japan and Korea this week has now boosted this figure.
Mario’s big screen animation has already set numerous milestones – such as being crowned the greatest video game adaptation ever and becoming Illumination’s third greatest animation ever (behind Minions and Despicable Me 3).
Nintendo and Illumination have already hinted that more are likely to come, but right now they’re focused on the success of the Mario movie in theaters around the world.
