We don’t often hear much about the game engines that power Nintendo’s library of games, but today is a little different with news that Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is reportedly runn ing on the same engine as Splatoon 3 and Nintendo Switch Sports .
This was pointed out by a Zelda enthusiast on social networks, and then data miner OatmealDome reached out to share more details:
“The best name we have for it so far is ‘ModuleSystem’… in sense [Tears of the Kingdom] interior, looks quite different compared to Breath of the Wild.”
OatmealDome goes on to speculate that the engine may have originally been built with Tears of the Kingdom in mind, with Switch Sports and Splatoon 3 “coincidentally coming out first”.
While it may not seem that interesting, it shows how versatile this engine is that it can jump from an online game like Splatoon 3 to a gyro focused game like Switch Sports and then to the open world gameplay of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
This is not all that the new Zelda games and Splatoon have in common. Last weekend, Nintendo held a special Zelda-themed Splatfest featuring Strength, Courage, and Wisdom. In the end, “Team Power” won.
