The relevance of Nintendo In different tournaments it is growing as the years go by. A clear example of this are the different tournaments they have held of one of their most outstanding competitive titles: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
These events are usually promoted very effectively, awakening the interest of the most dedicated players to this popular fighting title. However, it should be noted that in none of the tournaments organized by Nintendo offers great cash prizes, as if it happens with other games.
To find out precisely why Nintendo does not distribute large amounts of cash to the winners in the eSports scene, Nikkei spoke with the president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, to find out, and offered the following answer:
The eSports, in which players compete on stage for cash prizes while the audience watches, demonstrates one of the wonderful charms of video games. Not that we oppose that. So that anyone can enjoy our games regardless of their experience, sex or age, we want to be able to participate in a wide range of different events. Our strength, what sets us apart from other companies, is this different worldview, not a prize money.
As you can see, it seems that Nintendo does not want to highlight the elite by giving them lots of money. The Japanese company as you know has always stood out for wanting that all players, regardless of their skill level, have fun with their games, and are trying to convey that point of view in the world of eSports with Super Smash Bros Ultimate
