Now the developer Dodge Roll has spoken in an interview with Gamasutra to tell us more about a couple of titles that inspired the game, which at first seemed like a simple mix of both but later acquired a lot of personality.

It started out being more akin to a hybrid between Super Crate Box and a shoot em up like The Raiden Project, than Enter the Gungeon. Later, more and more Gungeon features were incorporated, making it a more 'traditional' infernal bullet-storm game, and Downwell was a marvel to us in terms of level flow and game speed.
