Insider Gaming reports that Ubisoft is working on an Animal Crossing-inspired game under the internal codename Alterra. A social sim game with interactive NPCs called Matterlings has apparently been in the works for about 18 months. The team involved in the game is Ubisoft Montreal ace led by Patrick Redding who was creative director of Gotham Knights at Warner Bros Games.
“Alterra was described to me as a social simulation inspired by Animal Crossing that will see players populate a home island that will consist of interactive NPCs called Matterlings. Sources said that players will be able to leave their home island and go to other worlds, consisting of different biomes, different types of Matterlings, enemies, materials and more, where they will also be able to interact with other players.”
“The game is said to be somewhat similar to Minecraft's building mechanics, allowing players to build whatever they want from collected materials. For example, if the player wants to create something out of snow and ice, he must travel (by an unknown path) to an icy world inhabited by snow-ice Matterlings.”
