Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot spoke with GamesIndustry about a number of topics, one of which is the latest Mario + Rabbids game, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. The game was rated fairly well, but sales ended up falling short of Ubisoft’s internal expectations. Mr. Guillemot says that in hindsight it would have been best to launch it as a successor to the Nintendo Switch. Speaking about Nintendo’s next platform, Guillemot said they plan to update Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope for “a new machine coming in the future.”
“Although, I think it was a different problem with Mario. We have already released the Mario Rabbids game [on Switch], so we had two similar experiences on one machine while working on the other. On Nintendo, games like this never die. There are 25 Mario games on the Switch. Nintendo [has advised] that it is better to do one iteration on each machine. We were a little early, we should have waited [the next console].”
“Because he could play a great game. And we think it will last ten years, because we will update it for the new machine that will come in the future.”
