Each week, physical games tracker GfK Entertainment provides some data on physical sales from the UK. However, game sales in the UK are not limited to them. Every month there is a monthly report on digital and physical software sales from GSD. At the same time, there is data on the sale of hardware and even accessories.
Well, the latest monthly list has arrived. May 2023 was nothing but good news for Nintendo, as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom dominated the month. It is the biggest launch of a Zelda game in the UK’s history, so much so that its release caused overall software sales to grow by 30% compared to the same period last year.
In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch was once again the No. 1 console. Before May, the PlayStation 5 was No. 1 for four consecutive months. Overall, console sales fell 10% compared to May 2022 and 14% compared to April. Nintendo Switch sales were actually down 5% compared to the previous month, but due to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, console sales were up 28% compared to May 2022. 35% of Switch sales in May were The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch model.
The launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom even benefited sales of accessories. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has climbed to #2 in accessory sales for the month. The PlayStation 5 DualSense controller is at #1. As for the Zelda Edition of the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, which launched with the game, it was the highest-ranking new addition to the chart for the month, at #20.
