At CES 2024, an unexpected and slightly disturbing appearance stole the spotlight as an AI-powered hologram of Nintendo’s iconic mascot Mario took center stage. The hologram, created by Proto Hologram, is displayed inside large box-like structures designed for interactive conversations. However, Proto Hologram has now acknowledged the unlicensed and unofficial nature of this creation. Surprisingly, the Mario hologram was initially conceived as part of a collaboration with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), an advocacy group for people over 50. The goal was to show how artificial intelligence holograms can potentially prevent the loneliness of the elderly. The selection of Mario and the performance of the hologram, featuring a 3D model with a bad voice and dead eyes, raised eyebrows and made many question the unconventional approach.
Footage from CES attendees revealed a stiff animation of the plumber, responding with generic answers and crude lip movements, accompanied by a robotic voice. As the footage went viral on social media, Proto Hologram responded to inquiries, noting that the AI hologram was an unfinished proof-of-concept tested for a client and not intended for commercial release. Importantly, both AARP and Nintendo distanced themselves from inadvertent exposure.
