We love good video game music. Whether it’s keeping us company during a grueling boss battle or lingering in the background as we prepare dinner at night, there’s something about these tunes that just hits different. Despite all those hours of familiarization with results, very few of us know what it takes to create a song. Until today.
In order to unravel just that mystery, the wonderful Felix of Nintendo-Life here recently had the good fortune to sit down with Eastward composer Joel Corelitz to discuss the process of creating music for the game.
Corelitz has been one of the brains behind a wide range of output, from 2021’s Zelda and its recent Octopia DLC to major AAA releases including Hello infinite and Death Stranding. In short, he knows his stuff.
In the video above, you can hear Felix and Joel discuss all things video game scoring, from where a composer might find inspiration, to how tunes are implemented into the game itself. It’s a fascinating discussion worth watching for anyone who’s ever left a game in the pause menu just to turn on the music (come on, we’re all guilty of it).
