What are you playing this weekend? (July 13)

Like last weekend, the next few days I’ll be mostly pouring my heart and soul into Hades. I still haven’t completed a full round (I had to take a break for my own sanity after reaching Hades’ second phase of pre-death attacks), but I’m determined to get there soon. Pretty neat little game, huh?

I also went back to A Link Between Worlds because the announcement of Echoes of Wisdom got me thinking about the last original top-down adventure. It must be said that Nintendo knows how to make a game! The puzzles are still magnificent, even after 10 years, and the art style is so incredibly charming. Go Nintendo, give us a late Switch port…

I recently took Jeff Minter’s Akka Arrh along with a few Atari reloaded titles, so I’m very much in the arcade space right now. Akka Arrh has a slightly confusing onboarding process (as do most of Minter’s games, to be honest), but once you ‘get the hang of it’, there’s nothing quite like it.

Elsewhere, I’m dipping my toes in again Axe: Shadows Die Twice. I haven’t finished it yet, but I realized it’s better to start from scratch instead of trying to pick up where I left off. There’s a reason why many consider it Fromm’s best work to date; it’s brutal, but beautiful.

I’m free from family responsibilities this weekend, which means… I’ll be gaming again! Except I’m playing TWO review games this time, well… that’s what I’m playing. And I can’t talk about them.

I have a few things on sale on Steam! Subnautics 2, Witchand The Painscreek Murders. So far I’ve only dived into Subnautica and it’s been a good time. I stole a baby alien penguin from its parents and now I have no idea what to do with it. Whoops?

Oh, and I finished Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door this week. It’s amazing how much I remember it, which further proves that I’m always right about video games and that everyone should listen to me. A few chapters are very laggy (looking at you, Boggly Woods), but it’s not bad with all the shortcuts they added in the remake! Now I can play Super Mario RPG, which I bought with a game voucher during that “buy game vouchers and get a ton of gold points” offer. Whoops!

Did you know I’m addicted to a certain shade of blue? Happening only during the summer, just before noon, the sky turns a deep shade of deep blue that stretches on forever. But what is that annoying buzzing sound that breaks my trance? Ah, missile lock alert. Some Erusean fool is trying to put a missile in my tail. The calm blue sky will have to wait.

You guessed it, I’ll spend the whole weekend playing (again). Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown – Deluxe Edition tackling my most challenging mission yet: writing the most comprehensive review ever for the most amazing/impossible Switch conversions to date! Keep watching the (virtual) sky…

I playtime consisted of a lot Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail or Ring of fire, and will continue to do so until I get bored (FFXIV) and beat the DLC (Elden Ring, which I’m not from at all — damn you, Maliketh!). As for the Switch, there’s a lot going on there too, mostly older stuff this time!

The drop of Starfy on NSO means I’ll be checking out a number of games I’ve always wanted to play. What a neat little idea to add some easy to understand titles in Japanese only to NSO. Certainly better than nothing. And I’m going to play Undertale again as preparation for a podcast with some friends. It’s still one of my favorite independent outlets of all time, so I’m excited to revisit it. Have a nice time!

That’s what we have planned for the weekend, what about you? You can let us know which game you’ll be running in the following poll, then share what else you have on your cards in the comments.
