What are you playing this weekend? (March 9)

Jim Norman, staff writer

For me, the whole week was Balatro and nothing but Balatro. I like to think that soon I will finally finish running and get some of the addiction out of my system. I just have to get past the damn final Ante * firstfist to the sky*.

If I’m feeling really adventurous, I might even go ahead and dive back into Pokémon X on the 3DS. I’ve been wanting to do a replay for a while, and since Lumiose City is about to become all the rage again, it seems only right that I brush up on my knowledge.

I’ve been madly juggling three different times for the past few weeks and I’m continuing to do so this weekend. Unicorn Overlord has obviously dominated my playthrough, but I have a few Overworld quests to complete before I’m completely done with the game. It’s fantastic – get it if you like strategy games or vanillaware.

Now that I have a bit more time, Balatro will probably dominate my gameplay on the Switch. Oh God, I can’t put this down and it’s becoming a bit of a problem. That’s the epitome of “just one more run,” isn’t it? Finally, on PS5, of course, I play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is awesome. It also has a card game that I can’t stop playing. I GOTY this year can be on something other than Switch… right?

I don’t know why, but I want some 16-bit relief and this weekend seems like a good time to go to Streets of Rage. 1, 2, 3, and maybe a cheesy picture 4. I might throw out the Mega Drive Mini and squeeze in some Castle of Illusion. Otherwise, it’s beatings on the street for me.

What is that? Backlog, you say? Oh, let it go.

After finally winning a streak at Balatra and zooming through The Forest Quartet this week, I don’t really know what to do with myself over the weekend. I could sink into touch Hello infinitemaybe even dip my proverbial toe into some more Penny’s Big Breakaway.

To be honest, there are too many good games out there these days. Nintendo, please eliminate three. It’s me not lunatic.

I’m still playing a certain card game that starts with B and ends with a tool, but I’m also trying to finish my backlog a bit before I allow myself to buy new games. Right now, that means the Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, Kill the princessand Ace Attorney.

But today the new season of Fortnite also comes out, and it’s about myths and monsters, so I’ll play that too!

It’s been a pretty productive week on the eShop and my bank account is not amused. This weekend I still have to finish Lords of Exile, play some more amazing Xelan Force, enjoy some more silliness with Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, the sheer joy of yo-yoing with Penny’s Big Breakaway and the nerve-racking, friendship-ending challenges of Heaven bodies without gravity. However, I’m afraid my foreseeable future is outside of the eShop.

I game of the week is, of course, Unicorn Overlord. Vanillaware takes over Tactics of the Ogre and Fire emblem, how could this possibly fail? Given the amount of time and love I have for the demo alone, I feel like I’ll be writing a lot about it in future WAYP entries.

Felix Sanchez, video producer

Last week I started my first playthrough of Dragon Quest XI and I intend to continue this glorious adventure this weekend because I absolutely love it!

I wasn’t exposed to much of Toriyama’s work before last week, but I find it wonderful that even in his final moments there were still people who were familiar with his amazing work. May he rest in peace.

That’s what we have planned for the weekend, what about you? Take the following poll with the game you’ll be running over the next few days, then slide into the comments to tell us what other titles are on the cards.
