Zora of the River and the Sea in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: Differences and Similarities

Since 1986, Zoras have been a recurring race in The Legend of Zelda universe, with two notable variants: the Zoras of the river and the Zoras of the sea. Throughout the franchise, Both subraces have played different roleswith the river Zoras being more hostile and monstrous, while the sea Zoras are characterized by their humanoid appearance and friendly nature. However, in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the relationship between these two factions takes an interesting turn that changes their traditional dynamic.

Origin and evolution of the Zoras of the river and the sea
Both subraces have made their appearance in multiple titles of the franchise, but rarely share the spotlight in the same game. River Foxes, known for their aggressive attitude, were introduced in games such as Zelda II:

Although they share the name, their differences are notable. The River Zoras are more like sea creatures with a reptilian appearance, while Sea Zoras are taller, slimmer and designed for life underwater, taking on a more humanoid appearance. This contrast in appearance has also been reflected in their roles within the series: while river Zoras tend to be hostile, sea Zoras have been valuable allies on several occasions.

Notable appearances and roles in the franchise
Over the years, both subraces have had very different roles. The Zoras of the river, with their antagonistic nature, have been recurring opponents in older titles. Instead, the Sea Zoras have evolved to become allies of Link, especially in Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wildwhere they play a crucial role in the plot and development of the game.

However, in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, both subraces coexist for the first time since Oracle of Ages/Seasons,

and the dynamic between them is different than what we’ve seen before. While historically the river Zoras have been enemies, in this new title both the river and sea Zoras share a more collaborative relationship with Zelda, though tensions persist between them.
