In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reviews Apple’s AI strategy. Apple’s goal will be to provide users with practical tools. The main iOS 18 apps, Safari, Photos, and Notes, will all benefit from the implementation of AI.
Apple will use AI to deliver the following new features:
- Photo editing.
- Transcription of voice messages.
- Suggested replies to emails and messages.
- Emojis automatically generated based on user message content, providing completely new and unique emojis.
- Improved search in Safari.
- Faster, more reliable searches in Spotlight.
- More natural interactions with Siri.
- A more advanced version of Siri designed for Apple Watch, optimized for “tasks on the go.”
- Smart summaries of missed notifications and individual messages, web pages, news articles, documents, notes and much more.
- Development tools for Xcode.
AI functions that require less processing power will run on-device, while more demanding functions will be run through the cloud. Apple also hopes to be able to utilize its huge user base.
Apple is expected to showcase many of its AI capabilities at WWDC 2024.
