GDDR memory has long been used by gaming graphics cards. This type of memory offers high bandwidth to support the large data flow that a GPU can offer.
As mentioned, Intel offers several Core laptop processors with DDR5 memory chips soldered directly into the DIE. This reduces latency, power consumption, and the amount of space required, allowing for more compact systems.
AMD Prepares New APUs With Soldered GDDR7 Memory
According to the NBD logistics and shipping database, there is a reference to Micron’s GDDR7 memory as part of a processor. This is an interesting fact, since GDDR7 memory almost doubles the bandwidth of GDDR6. In addition, this new VRAM will be used in the upcoming NVIDIA RTX 50 with Blackwell architecture.
Note that AMD was the first manufacturer to offer a chip with specific NPU cores for artificial intelligence. The first Phoenix APU solutions will now receive an upgrade with the Strix Halo APUs, offering power up to 55 TOPS.
The new Strix Halo solutions feature a 16-core Zen 5 chipset and a 40-core RDNA 3.5 GPU. For better performance, it may have been combined with GDDR7 memory. It should be noted that iGPUs normally use RAM that acts as graphics memory, which seriously affects performance, as they offer less bandwidth.
But, most likely, it will not be a commercial AMD APU integrating GDDR7 memories. Recently, we saw the confirmation of the PS5 Pro console, which will use a custom solution from AMD. The current Sony console already uses a semi-custom APU combined with GDDR6 memories.
According to the first leaks, the PS5 Pro will have a larger GPU, equivalent in power to the AMD RX 7700 XT. There is also talk of faster memories, so the logical thing would be to use GDDR7 memories, instead of the current GDDR6 memories.
We know the following about the PS5 Pro and its new configuration:
- 45% performance increase in rasterization thanks to a more powerful GPU and faster memories.
- Features enhanced ray tracing that delivers up to 3x greater capacity.
- It features a 300 TOPS @ 8-bit machine learning solution to drive PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
- PSSR is an optimized version of Temporal Anti-Aliasing Upscaling (TAAU) with similar features to NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR. It offers full HDR support and requires no in-game training.
Finally, let’s clarify that the next AMD RX 8000 Series will be based on the RDNA4 architecture and will continue to use GDDR6. We will have to wait for the RDNA 5 graphics architecture for the company to release GDDR7 memories.
