5 years later, AMD has just announced that it will unify the two architectures into one called UDNA. In this way, it is doing the same thing that NVIDIA has been doing for many years with CUDA.
The goal of UDNA, said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Group, is to provide a single approach that allows developers to build applications optimized for both chart for home use (RX range) such as the graphics used in data centers (Instinct Range)
RDNA and CDNA are now UDNA
In this way, AMD is following the same path that NVIDIA has been following for years with CUDA, where developers can run applications both on desktop devices for home use and in large data centers. Jack Huynh says that AMD is tired of having to reset the die during optimizations every time they change the memory hierarchy.
For now, the company is focusing its efforts not only on rDNA 5, rDNA 6 And rDNA 7but also in UDNA 6 And UDNA 7 To avoid changing the hierarchy, the next three generations of graphics are already planned.
The announcement comes days after it was confirmed that AMD would not participate in the deal. high-end graphics cards for home use, ceding the entire share of the pie to NVIDIA, which currently dominates the market with an 85% share. AMD thus wants to concentrate its efforts on the mid- and low-end of graphics cards, where it offers very good models with a very good price-performance ratio.
However, this does not mean that it completely rules out the possibility of returning to the high-end graphics market for home use, although it may be that when that happens, it will be too late unless it launches a graphics card that gives a thousand thoughts to the most powerful NVIDIA graphics card of the time. We will have to wait and see how the graphics card market evolves in the coming years.
And what about Intel graphics?
Intel, which did not enter the market very well by presenting its first generation of Arc graphics, continues to work on the second generation, a second generation of which it is not known at the moment when it should be presented on the market, although it could be as soon as possible.
At the moment, the new Xe2 architecture used by the integrated graphics card of some of its processors offers very good results in performance and consumption.
Initially, its launch is scheduled for this year, so it is possible that Intel will take advantage of the event initially scheduled for October, where it will present the new range of Core Ultra processors for desktop computers to surprise us.
