It’s the end of August, which means that there are fewer and fewer days until the start of the school year. If you need to renew your old laptop or if it’s the first time you need one, in the market we can find different types, each one focused on different audiences, since not all of them have the same characteristics in terms of power, autonomy and compatibility to name the most important sections.
When buying a laptop for study, to make the choice easier, we have narrowed down the options to 3: Chromebook, regular laptop and Ultrabook.
Chromebook
The main advantage that Chromebooks offer is autonomy and that revolves around the Google ecosystem, since its operating system is Chrome OS. This is a significant drawback since the applications available for Windows cannot be installed. Alternatively, we can take advantage of the large number of applications available on the Play Store.
In terms of autonomy, these devices consume very few resources and therefore offer autonomy between 8 and 10 o’clock. These are very light and compact devices designed mainly for studies and for older people who occasionally need a computer without too many pretensions. The price of these devices usually does not exceed 500 dollars, although we can find interesting and much cheaper options like the ones we show you below.
Portable
If we talk about a laptop, we must talk about a device whose price is based on the possibilities of performance that it is capable of offering, its price therefore varies considerably. This type of equipment is heavier and takes up more space than a Chromebook or an ultrabook and more than designed to be moved from here to there, it is aimed at users who do not have a lot of space available for a desktop computer.
Battery life varies depending on its features and usage. If this includes a graphics card dedicated and we use it in editing processes or for playing, the autonomy will be considerably reduced. They are managed by Windowswhich allows you to install any application compatible with this ecosystem and is aimed at users who need mobility without giving up functionality. You can find laptops from 400 dollars up to the limit you want, since some models go up to 6,000 dollars.
Ultrabook
The principle of the Ultrabook is very similar to what Google Chromebooks offer, but eliminating its main negative points. This type of equipment is designed to offer a great autonomy which can reach up to 15 hours or more on equipment managed by processors with ARM architecture like the ASUS Vivobook S15 that we reviewed at HardZone.
They offer sufficient performance to use office applications without problems. Being managed by Windows, we can install any application compatible with this operating system. This equipment is perfect for people who need mobility above all thanks to its small dimensions and great autonomy. Its price varies depending on the characteristics of the equipment, and we can find very good devices between 800 and 1,000 dollars.
What is the best option?
In this article we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each of the types of laptops that can be found on the market. There is no better or worse. Each one is designed to perform a series of more or less light tasks, with an autonomy that varies according to use and not all allow the installation of the same applications.
When choosing which is the best option, we must make a list of what we really need: autonomy rather than compatibility, performance rather than autonomy, maximum autonomy without giving up application compatibility, among others.
