New reports suggest that Disney+ could add traditional linear-style TV channels to its portfolio, with consistent ad-supported streams dedicated to specific IPs such as Marvel.
Rumors have been circulating from The Information, which claims that the entertainment giant will use these still-on channels to stream its existing superhero shows. This could include Loki, WandaVision and Hawkeye, providing a constant stream of MCU action.
The same article also states that there is interest in dedicated Star Wars and Pixar channels, the latter drawing on a large portfolio of older animated films.
Disney declined to comment on these rumors to The Verge, but the launch plan appears to be a new tactic to get users to spend more time in the app. If the rumors are true, we also don’t know when these channels will launch.
According to Bloomberg, ad-supported streamers such as Pluto and Tubi have longer watch times than ad-free competitors such as Paramount+ and Max because users can mindlessly keep them on to avoid background noise – just like if you turned on the TV.
This could also be an opportunity for Disney to incorporate exclusive premieres into its ad-supported plan. Marvel has a devoted following, with many users eager to avoid spoilers online.
Streaming “live” content on a dedicated channel could be a way to bring back the weekly hype we had with traditional television, with new episodes airing at specific times. This could also be a great way to kick off future Marvel movie releases such as Deadpool and Wolverine. Additionally, they would benefit from watching the advertisements.
Simply put, it feels like streaming is slowly returning to the cable TV model, but with more flexible contracts. Technology is truly a cycle.
The move also aligns with Disney’s plans for a new sports streaming service in collaboration with Warner and Fox, which will almost certainly be ad-supported due to its live nature.
You can sign up for Disney+ on the website, with plans starting from £4.99/$7.99 per month.
