There is a saga of strategy and turn-based combat legendary for many players. We refer to the X-Com of Microprose, first released in 1993 on PC and are considered by many to be the true benchmark of the genre. Well, if you want to relive the same experience, now you can do so by controlling super-powered comic book heroes.
Indeed, a little over a year ago, we learned that a game called Capes. Layers It could be the translation of a project that would focus on comic book superheroes – original, nothing from Marvel or DC – and which would have a development practically modeled on that of the mythicals. X-Com. And when we say it traces it, we don’t mean it negatively, but rather the opposite, as a way of taking many of us back to those incredible 90s of PC.
Superheroes want to be like X-Com
We have already told you that this inspiration X-Com It’s found in almost the entire game, but it’s not the most important thing. Capesof Daedalic Entertainmentwas a project that, although only officially revealed a year ago, was previously scheduled to launch in 2022, but we imagine a “series of catastrophic misfortunes” led to it being delayed until ‘to this year.
At the moment it does not have a launch window and in Steam The generic date appears as “2024”, but we can already say that we tried it after accessing a beta which showed us the first steps of the adventure. And we have to tell you that the truth is that it looks very good, especially if you are one of those who like this kind of strategy and turn-based combat that is not, precisely, an outing aimed at General public.
Basically we have a group of heroes who face different enemies that appear on the screen through a scenario divided into quadrants through which we can move, execute attacks and retreat to avoid damage. He ABC genre, but it adds a point of complexity that makes it really special. Do you know which one?
Narrative characters and superheroes
What we really liked is that, compared to this very typical approach to X-Com, Daedalic Entertainment was able to build a game with its own personality where the special powers of each character determine what you can or cannot do on screen. We start with two protagonists, one with crystalline powers and the other who entrusts everything to his agility as a thug and knife attacks that arrive when the enemy least expects them thanks to instant teleports.
It’s this part of the heroes’ powers that really makes the game shine. Capes, because it is a lot of fun to complete the two characters in the group or, as we progress, to recruit new ones to mix them and obtain the greatest possible power. Of course, the supervillains will not make our task easier either because they also have certain particularly destructive abilities which, as soon as we make a bad move or do not protect ourselves by escaping in turn, can lead to death or incapacity.
The game is not yet on sale but we can assure you that it is a must have For all those who feel like orphans X-Com and they haven’t had access to any similar games in recent years. Capeswhen it arrives, will fill this gap competently (it works wonderfully on virtually all modern PCs) and, above all, in a very fun and will comic.
