Kaiju fans, rejoice. Godzilla and Kong are back, but this time the two giants don’t face each other. They will have to put aside their differences and team up against a new threat in The Hollow Earth.
Previous films in the MonsterVerse series such as Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters have had post-credits teasers to give fans an idea of what they will see next. But does Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire follow this trend?
We’ve seen an early screening of the film and can confirm it now. If you want to get your tickets, you can do so from Cineworld, Odeon and Vue in the UK, as well as AMC and Fandango in the US.
Does Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire have a post-credits scene?
Unfortunately, there is no post-credits scene at the end of Godzilla x Kong. However, we hear the roar of a Titan who made an unexpected appearance in the film, which could indicate where the franchise will go next – if they make another film, of course.
Which Titan roared at the end of Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom?
Spoilers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom below
After hearing the roar, we believe it belongs to the Queen of Monsters herself, Mothra. This is further corroborated by comicbookmovie, who also believes they heard the peaceful giant.
Why is Mothra in Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom?
The original Mothra met its demise in the Godzilla sequel against the fearsome three-headed dragon, King Ghidorah. However, a new version (Mothra 2.0, if you will) was awakened from her stasis by Jia, who was discovered to be the daughter of the prophecy Iwi who would save the Hollow Earth tribe from King Skar and his army.
Mothra helped Godzilla come to his senses when he tried to attack King Kong in a hilariously ridiculous fight near the Cairo Pyramids. The great ape needed the lizard’s help to defeat a new threat, but Godzilla did not listen to Kong’s pleas for peace. He only calmed down when Mothra arrived and apparently delivered the message.
She also protected humans during battle by chasing away enemies and debris, and ultimately played an important role in the survival of the remaining Iwi tribe.
Mothra’s return could also mean she’ll be the focus of another MonsterVerse movie. This also matches another post-credits teaser that occurred in a previous film in the series.
Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) managed to get his hands on one of Ghidorah’s heads. This spirit ended up being used for Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, as Screen Rant points out, we never saw the destruction of the head. It may still exist.
Mothra was killed by Ghidorah in King of the Monsters, but in the process her powers were transferred to Godzilla via his ashes, preventing him from suffering a nuclear meltdown and ultimately allowing him to defeat the dragon.
The 1996 Japanese film Rebirth of Mothra shows the Titan laying an egg to preserve the species, and as such she is effectively immortal. The most recent outbreak was sparked by Jia in Godzilla x Kong.
If another movie were to focus on Mothra, it would make sense to bring back Ghidorah in some form so she can get her revenge. Many suspect that the dragon could return as Mecha-King Ghidorah, who has yet to appear in the MonsterVerse.
So there is only one question left…
Will there be another MonsterVerse movie?
At the time of writing, there is no confirmation for another film after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
That said, director Adam Wingard gave the following quote to DiscussingFilm:
The idea that if you’ve made two films, maybe you should just make a third because, like you said, there’s a trilogy in there. I definitely think there’s more story to tell, and I think I have more story to tell. But it just depends on how [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] done and how things are evolving. I know that sounds like a stupid diplomatic response (laughs). But the truth is, if I’m going to be completely honest with you, I still have more stories to tell with these monsters and I know where I would go with that.
No names were mentioned in this quote, but we think Mothra could play a big role in the upcoming film. And of course, we could also see the return of Godzilla, Kong and Shimo, after his release from King Skar.
We’ll likely know more in the coming months about whether Godzilla x Kong will get a sequel, as it rolls out to cinemas around the world. Find out when we expect the film to hit home releases here.
