Our verdict
There’s no doubt that the Dreame X40 Ultra is a very capable robot vacuum cleaner, both in terms of suction and cleaning. It requires minimal maintenance and offers a user-friendly app with plenty of customization options. Sure, it costs a pretty penny, but if you’re willing to invest, it’s hard to find a more reliable and powerful cleaning robot right now.

It’s been almost a year since we reviewed the Dreame L20 Ultra, which was at the time the brand’s most advanced model, offering a taste of the future of cleaning. The future is now here: meet the new Dreame X40 Ultra! The fact that a robot vacuum can both vacuum and mop is no longer impressive, and the fact that it empties both dust and dirty water is not particularly revolutionary.
You can buy Dreame’s X40 Ultra in the UK for £1,299 and in the US for $1,899, or browse all of our best robot vacuum recommendations.
The pace of development is fast and new models with more and more advanced features are being launched at a steady pace. To attract both new and repeat buyers, you need something unique, something that you simply have. has to have.

The X40 Ultra takes cleaning to a new level
A more precise navigation system, more efficient obstacle detection and increasingly powerful suction are some of the selling points. But the current keyword is cleaning – and we’re talking about truly advanced cleaning, in which oscillating pads take over after vacuuming to deliver a sparkling clean floor, even along edges and in tight corners. The Dreame L20 Ultra and Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra are brilliant examples of models that offer these innovative solutions to reach all areas.
The new X40 Ultra offers all of this, and then some. The base station is slightly slimmer than the L20 Ultra, but it still takes up a bit of space. That’s not surprising, considering all that’s inside: two tanks, one for clean water and one for dirty water (4.5 and 4.0 liters respectively), a dust bag, and all the mechanisms for cleaning and drying the mops.
The robot cleaner has a design that we are used to lately: a round shape with a raised area on the top that houses the laser navigation system. At the front there is an RGB camera with AI and 3D structured light for effective identification of possible obstacles.
Easy installation, many customization options
Installation is quick and all information about functions and setting options is presented in a didactic manner in the associated app. After an initial reconnaissance visit, your home is mapped and ready to be cleaned. In addition to the usual settings, such as naming rooms and adding no-go zones or virtual walls, the app offers many features to discover.
The app offers many customization options

Do you want the robot to vacuum the carpets in your home before cleaning other surfaces? Or should it avoid them altogether? How often should it clean the mops? Should it raise the mop and only vacuum when it recognizes a carpet? Should it automatically recognize how dirty the surface is and make an extra pass if necessary? All of these options can be customized to your needs.
Meanwhile, the X40 Ultra is equipped with a range of features that allow it to adapt to different floor types and cleaning needs. The rubber brush in the center automatically lifts when liquid is detected on the floor, allowing the mops to wipe it instead. The side brush and right mop can be tilted to reach corners and clean along edges effectively.
The base station can accommodate a variety of containers. The smaller one, bottom left, is for detergents

All of these features can be customized in a number of ways in the app to best suit your home. You can choose whether dirtier surfaces should be cleaned more thoroughly or opt for a more thorough clean around table and chair legs. Most of these settings can be adjusted manually, or you can turn on Clean Genius mode and let the machine make all of these decisions for you.
Another impressive feature is the 12,000 Pa suction power, which is particularly noticeable on thicker carpets. This is where the X40 Ultra shines, and after a cleaning session, carpets appear perfectly cleaned.
Exceptional cleaning results
The Dreame X40 Ultra is equipped with a 6,400 mAh battery, which provides a long operating time per charge. This is especially necessary when the robot has to perform a deep cleaning, which can take a while – about 70 minutes for an area of 47 square meters. The working time is also influenced by the frequency of mop cleaning (with or without hot water), which can be easily adjusted via the app.
The folding side brush allows better access in corners and along edges

I find the handling to be excellent – it can climb over obstacles up to 22mm, which allows it to clear thresholds without any problem. The obstacle detection is also top notch. If a small cable or sock gets in the way, it will avoid these obstacles while taking a photo which you can then review.
The cleaning results are exceptional and the folding side brush is magical: it effectively reaches areas where most other machines fail. The mopping function is also the most advanced and effective I have encountered so far.
High price, but offers a complete answer
In short, the Dreame X40 Ultra is a cutting-edge robot vacuum cleaner that combines powerful suction with advanced cleaning features and innovative accessories. It’s perfect for those who want a reliable cleaning assistant that can handle everything from everyday messes to more demanding tasks. With its advanced obstacle avoidance system and customizable cleaning options, it works equally well no matter what your home looks like. If you can afford it – because it costs a pretty penny – it’s one of the best options on the market right now.
