If you are over 30 (like a server), you have surely opened a box containing a computer component and inside was a CD with drivers. A few days ago I was cleaning and I found about twenty of these optical disks with drivers. Currently, already no components bring a CD with driversbut do you know the reasons?
In the past, especially the graphics card and motherboard, came with a driver disk. Especially, the motherboard was important, because we could often find that the network card was not detected, the sound card or the USB ports once Windows is installed.
But these days, these disks are no longer present in component boxes. There are several reasons why it is no longer necessary to include a driver CD. In fact, it would be foolish.
Reasons for Driver CDs Disappearing
The first and most important reason is that 99% of users no longer have an account. CD player. Before, everything was on CDs or DVDs, but today, optical discs have almost disappeared. You download games from digital stores, you watch series and movies online on Netflix, Disney, HBO or elsewhere, and you download drivers from the web or use tools like Driver Booster.
We noted that at the time of Windows XP or earlier version, you could install the operating system, but you were missing the red driversound or USB, among others. Additionally, a very generic graphics driver was installed to work while you installed the correct driver.
Things have changed a lot and since Windows 7 and especially since Windows 10, the operating system includes generic drivers for absolutely everything. It allows the user to navigate the system and connect to the Internet to download good drivers. So there is no point in adding a disk with drivers that no one will use.
Another reason is that disk drivers were always outdated. This means that the driver had to, so to speak, make the component work and nothing else. Manufacturers hoped in vain that the user would go to their website and download the latest drivers. This only happened with one driver and that is the one for the graphics cardand not always.
NVIDIA currently offers GeForce Experience and AMD Radeon Software Tool Adrenaline for controller management. When they release a new driver, we receive a notice of availability. Thanks to these applications, we can download and install it without major problems.
For the rest of the controllers We can access the built-in Windows update system which also checks for new drivers. Alternatively, we can use programs like Driver Booster, which avoid having to go to the manufacturer’s website for updates.
The last reason is that it allows them to reduce costs. Indeed, the cost of an optical disk can be as little as 1 euro for the component manufacturer, which is very generous. But we already know that anything that can be saved and increase profits is always welcome.
