Lenovo Legion S7 review
From the box to the laptop, it is clear that this is a product of the highest range. Lenovo has taken great care of its details, transporting your laptop in a very well-protected cardboard box. Inside we will find a box with the laptop in question and another with the charger and other accessories included.
The laptop is silver in color, a very elegant color that sets it apart from the conventional colors of this type of high performance laptop. In addition, being made of aluminum, we are faced with a team that is not only elegant, but resistant to the passing of time.
In order to keep the laptop as thin as possible, Lenovo has reduced the number of connections that can be found to a minimum. And this, depending on the use that we are going to give to the PC, can pose a problem. We will have at our disposal 2 USB type A ports, and two other USB type C. But, for example, we will not have a network card, nor an HDMI port (although USB type C is compatible with DisplayPort ).
The overall design of the laptop is pretty neat. From the full-size membrane keyboard (even with a numeric keypad) to the screen, with a matte finish to prevent glare. The power button at the top and the trackpad aligned to the left.
At first glance, we are dealing with a normal laptop. But the game shines at night, when the RGB keyboard lighting makes its appearance. In addition, with a simple keyboard shortcut (Fn + Q) we can switch between normal mode, silent mode, and high performance mode, much louder.
Thanks to the fact that it comes with Windows 10 installed as standard, the computer will be ready to start working from the first moment. In addition, you meet the necessary requirements to be able to upgrade to Windows 11. The upgrade will be completely free to Windows 11 Pro as soon as it becomes available after the summer. And it supports the latest essential Windows 11 features like DirectStorage (thanks to NVMe) and Android app emulation from its subsystem (thanks to the Intel processor).
Work, play … Why not for everything?
So, is the Lenovo Legion S7 a work laptop or a gaming laptop? Let’s start with the first one. Depending on the type of work we do (office automation, programming, design, etc.), this laptop is more than enough. Thanks to its 10th generation Intel Core i7 processor, it can easily move all kinds of documents, large spreadsheets and even databases. Google Chrome (or the browser we use) is not going to pose a problem for it since in addition to having the most powerful processor on the market, it has 16 GB of RAM. Do we need the Internet to function? This Legion will be able to take full advantage of our Wi-Fi connection thanks to its Killer AX1650 11ax Wi-Fi card. The one that lacks Wi-Fi is surely the router, not the laptop.
But what if we devote ourselves to a bit more comprehensive work? We are talking about using graphic design programs (such as Photoshop), video editing programs (such as Adobe Premiere) or much more demanding programs, such as 3D design programs (Blender), development engines and game rendering (Unity or Unreal Engine) and, of course, CAD design programs. These programs are much more demanding than Word or Excel, and they do not always work well on simple computers. Fortunately, Lenovo doesn’t have the slightest problem getting them to work. In addition to its processor and the right amount of RAM included, this laptop has an included NVIDIA RTX 2060 graphics card thanks to which we will be able to enable hardware acceleration in these programs and thus guarantee its proper functioning in all kinds of tasks. .
We can’t think of any job where this laptop could fail. In addition, as we have seen, unlike what happens with other high-end, or “gaming” laptops, the Lenovo Legion S7 is a relatively small (in terms of thickness) and lighter. that it seems. Therefore, we can always take it with us without any problem in the event of a move.
You can save money with work, but what about playtime? Lenovo Legion S7 hardware is just as good as many desktop PCs. Its i7 processor, RAM memory and, above all, the dedicated NVIDIA GPU will allow you to play with virtually any game on the market. Even, as we have seen, until the controversial Cyperpunk 2077. We obviously cannot expect to run the game in 4K, 144 Hz and with Ray Tracing at the maximum, because it is not a team for that. But we will be able to play this game with a much more modest configuration without any problem. And from there, at the bottom, no problem: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Fortnite … whatever you want.
Conclusion: how are the new Lenovo Legions?
Of course, we can’t deny that Lenovo has done an amazing job. It is true that these teams are not exactly cheap. This particular model is around 1,400 or 1,500 dollars, depending on the store where we buy it. However, its power is comparable to any desktop computer, with the advantage that we can always take it with us in a bag or backpack.
Lenovo has strived for the perfect balance when choosing components to have a computer for a long time. From its 10th generation i7 processor to the 512 GB NVMe bet, including the dedicated RTX 2060 MaxQ of course. Thanks to these components, the computer will not become obsolete for a long time, being able to without problems even with the PC games to come. In addition, with the arrival of Windows 11 at the end of this year, we will be able to enjoy the computer much more thanks to the new features that Microsoft will allow, features that will make it a real video game console.
If there is one negative point to be underlined about this laptop, we could speak above all about the price. Although understandable, 1400 dollars is an investment that is not accessible to everyone, and even less as an accessory to play. In addition, it has been brought to our attention that the screen is not in 4K, and that the webcam integrated in the upper part is not compatible with Windows Hello. We also missed a fingerprint reader, as it makes logging into the computer a lot easier.
Despite everything, we are facing a magnificent team. Therefore, we decided to give this Lenovo Legion S7 our price of platinum, emphasizing, above all, its sublime performance.
