We are in a complicated hardware market, with some components very expensive and others falling in price. We now know the situation of the data display screen market, which also fell significantly in sales. According to TrendForce, the sale of gaming monitors in 2023 recorded a drop of about 13%.
This situation of falling component sales is obvious and is directly related to COVID-19. During this period, many new systems were sold, all driven by teleworking and distance training. A scenario that generated a requirement that no longer exists and in which the forced renewal process has already been completed.
Collapse (also) of the sale of gaming screens
As a first information, indicate that the sale of this device suffered the first decline since 2016. According to the report, 19.8 million gaming monitors were sold in 2022, a decrease of 13% compared to the previous year. Of course, this situation will be reversed this year, according to the data revealed in the report.
TrendForce reported that by 2023, a distribution of 20.8 million units is expected. It assumes a recovery of this market by 5%. Note that the report highlights three recovery factors:
- manufacturers are replace its models with 75Hz refresh rates per models above 100 Hz
- For the third quarter of 2023, the Hangzhou Asian Games and that would mean increase in demand and, therefore, the sale of systems and peripherals
- China lifted restrictions after COVID-19, so the demand for internet cafes is expected to pick up gradually
This report also gives us data on the types of panels most in demand on the market. TrendForce tells us the following:
- The bone AV monitors were the best sellers in 2022, with a 51% of fees market
- Very close are the IPS monitors with a 43.4% share
- The bone TN monitors represent the 5% of sales totales
- Finally, the OLED monitors represent the 0.6% of total sold. It is estimated that in 2023 these monitors will reach a share of 1.6%
The report reveals another interesting thing and that is that IPS monitors could compete with VA monitors. IPS-type monitors are gaining market share through lower prices.
Also refresh rate data
Let’s move on to another aspect of the report that we find interesting, such as the refresh rate. The report highlights the most common among panels for gaming monitors. These are:
- Refresh rate between 165Hz and 180Hz: 51.9%
- Refresh rate between 120Hz and 160Hz: 32.5%
- Refresh rate above 200Hz: 11.7%
- Refresh rate up to 100Hz: 3.9%
The report also indicates that the refresh rate between 165 Hz and 180 Hz, as well as those up to 100 Hz will increase significantly in sales in 2023. Note that the 120 Hz and 160 Hz models will be replaced by those between 165 Hz and 180 Hz. This is because the price difference is quite small.
