The line of smartphones Google’s mid-range has done pretty well in recent years and as soon as the Pixel 4a arrived, rumors started to start about the Pixel 5a.
Not much to say yet. However, the rendered images and the leaked specs appear to reveal a phone that would be very similar to last year’s model, so don’t expect a drastically different design.
Has the Pixel 5a been canceled?
No, but it may not arrive in your country.
In April 2021, Jon Prosser assured that the Pixel 5a would have been canceled due to the global chip supply crisis, which resulted in delays and production issues in mobiles and game consoles.

So on after, Google responded in a statement posted on 9to5Google
“The Pixel 5a 5G has not been canceled. It will be available this year in the US and Japan and will be announced at the same time as last year’s A-series mobile.”
So yes, the Pixel 5a (or 5a 5G) is on its way, but it will only arrive in the United States and Japan. We don’t know if it will make it in other markets later, but it looks like it will be a smaller launch than usual.
What is the Pixel 5a release date?
Google’s previous statement confirms that the 5th 5G will be announced “at the same time as last year’s A-series mobile was introduced”.
The Pixel 4a was announced in August, so it looks like the 5a could be coming August 2021. That would mean that wouldn’t be the case at Google I / O, where Android 12 will be unveiled.
We believe the Pixel 5a 5G will launch on its own, as the Pixel 6, a foldable Pixel mobile, and the Pixel Watch would arrive at the end of the year.
How much will the Pixel 5a cost?
It’s too early for any rumors, but we don’t think Google will stray away from the Pixel 4a’s price tag of $ 389.

- Pixel 4 XL: 899 $
- Pixel 4a: 389 $
- Pixel 5: 629 $
What will the specifications of the Pixel 5a be?
With a pretty drastic design change for the 4a, we don’t think Google will do anything so drastic with the Pixel 5a.
In fact, this is what we saw in the first images rendered from mobile, which come to us from OnLeaks. It would look more like the Pixel 4a 5G than the standard 4a, as it looks like it will replace the larger model.
With a size of 156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8mm, it is quite similar to the 4a 5G (a bit longer and thicker, although narrower). Again, it will have a flat screen, probably 6.2 “OLED FHD + and with similar bezels.
Again you will have a camera selfie Integrated into the camera, with a dual camera setup on the back. We don’t know the specs, although Google has also disclosed some key details.
In its blog, talking about the HDR capabilities of Pixel mobiles, Google accidentally leaked two images that could match the Pixel 5a.
This photograph was reportedly taken with a Pixel 5a. This is clearly a photo taken with an ultra wide angle, with an aperture of f / 2.2 (the same as that of the 4a 5G). Google deleted these photos, so it was clearly a mistake.
This second image is less clear, but it would be the only photo in the album that did not include EXIF data. It was released on February 16, so it’s possible that it came from a Pixel 5a.
Inside, the 5a would be quite similar to the 4a 5G. 9to5Google have explored the code of the Overview for Android 12 developers and found several references to the codename of the 5a (‘barbet’), as well as ‘sm7250’ (corresponding to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip).
OnLeaks it also ensures that the fingerprint sensor on the back will remain present, as well as the port jack for headphones and stereo speakers.
Wish List: What do we want to see in the Google Pixel 5a?
What we would like to see are additions like wireless charging and waterproofing as they would make a bigger difference in the user experience. The iPhone SE has them, albeit at a higher cost, so maybe one, but not both, is a realistic prospect.
There will almost certainly be an updated processor, likely another mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon with decent 4a-based RAM and storage. However, don’t expect Google to change its expandable storage policy the way Apple did.
Camera tech will likely be one of the Pixel 5a’s biggest draws. Google has done a great job of delivering a flagship camera at an affordable price. The big question is whether Google will add a secondary camera.
The Pixel 4 has a telephoto lens so it can be brought up to 5th place if Google can make it work profitably.
The technical advisory team would prefer a wide-angle lens, but we wouldn’t be too surprised if Google stuck with one lens to differentiate itself from its flagship phones.
