Last week it was presented Microsoft Copilot+a set of new functions and features that have expanded the AI capabilities of Windows 11. Well, now Microsoft announced SR car, a resizing technology for video games based on artificial intelligence technology. Thanks to this technology, an improvement in the performance of video games is obtained.
This is not the first time that we have seen artificial intelligence integrated into video game technologies. NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) allows resizing of video games supplemented by artificial intelligence.
You should know that, at the moment, the systems compatible with Copilot+ are very limited. Currently, only laptops with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor are supported. Certainly, in the coming months there will be more systems compatible with this new technology.
Features of Microsoft Auto SR
Although Microsoft doesn’t fully explain how Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) works, we get an idea by looking at the technologies. NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS available on the market. The game will be run at a lower resolution than desired and then resized using artificial intelligence. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to increase the number of FPS and therefore improve the gaming experience.
For example, if we want to play in 1080p resolution, the game runs at 720p resolution and then scales to the desired resolution. This “trick” allows you to increase the amount of FPS in the game and improve the experience.
Microsoft explains it this way on its website:
Auto SR works by automatically reducing the game’s rendering resolution to increase frame rates, then uses sophisticated AI technology to deliver enhanced high-definition visuals. This results in a smoother and more detailed gaming experience. Auto SR is applied by default to a set of verified games.
Requirements to use this technology
Along with this announcement, the company has kindly revealed what the specifications are for using this technology. Here are the requirements to take advantage of Microsoft Auto SR:
- Games with official compatibility.
- Computer with a Copilot+ compatible processor (currently, must have a Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor with Hexagon NPU and integrated GPU).
- Windows 11 24H2 operating system or higher versions.
- Automatic updates enabled.
- Latest drivers for NPU cores and graphics.
- Screen resolution 1080p or higher.
The only thing that is unclear to us is whether this feature is limited to iGPUs or will also be available in systems with dedicated graphics (dGPUs).
Compatible games
As with NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS, developers will need to enable this technology. Therefore, a list of supported games will be generated and will surely expand over time. For the moment, these are the first games to benefit from support for this technology:
- 7 days to die
- BeamNG player
- Borders 3
- Control
- Dark Souls III
- God of the war
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance
- Resident Evil 2
- Resident Evil 3
- Axe: Shadows Die Twice
- Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 Contracts
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
In the coming weeks, we will surely discover more games that support this technology. There are some interesting games out there, but we’re missing big names like Fortnite or CS:GO 2, among other relevant multiplayer games.
