Its new SSD brings a series of consumer market developments, becoming the first device that supports the company's PCIe 4.0 out of its business range. Not much details about it, since Samsung has been cautious when it offers features, but it could be the best M.2 NVMe SSD presented by the company by lovers.
Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVMe: new king of limited time?
Shown by Samsung, it's a beauty talk, which we've seen over the past 3 years: an SSD with a black PCB, without some sort of heatsink and apparently has a one-sided plan for motherboards.
In terms of performance data, the product confirms reading of 6500 MB / s and 5000 MB / s writes, which is a nice improvement, but not shocking about what we can now buy in the market with competitive models.
It is still unclear what kind of controller it is using, since the current operating limit is marking this, but in any case, we can find that it will not be a known Phison E16 with its known limits. Its newest and most announced version, E18, should increase performance somewhat than we currently have in the market, when the numbers are close 7 GB / s
Samsung offers high durability over capacity
Evidence of this is that it is reported that this new SSD 980 Pro will reach the market at a rate of 250 GB in 1 TB, which seems to indicate that Samsung is still in the spotlight when it ranks 13th in offering TLC as the main NAND Flash for its leading SSDs.
This should focus on the greater resilience of MLC cells compared to TLC, although in a more mature stage. We saw it in his series 970 EVO and Plus, where the SSD with TLC was not introduced within the PRO range.
The product has not yet reported what generation of V-NANDs they are using on this new SSD, and yet we do not know how many layers of their cells. At the same time, there is no data provided on the cost of each version on average or on the dates that retailers can reach, so it seems that previews are focused within a few months rather than on a product that can be sold in a limited time space.
We will have to wait for the official submission made by Samsung to find out more about the details 980 PRO M.2 NVMe.
