In our tests we will use the Corsair K70 RapidFire RGB LP machine keyboard, a mechanical keyboard with switches Cherry MX Speed Low Profile which, each of them, has an RGB of R Independent. In addition, this keyboard has two additional LEDs on top, the product logo.
How to calculate keyboard usage
We have many options, but since the keys are connected to the PC via USB and from there they take all the power they need. It is difficult to use a multimeter, because we can't put poles in the connector while we are working. So, we will use a USB hub with a voltage and current meter, Silverstone EP03.
To calculate consumption, we must take an accurate look at i current size, measured in Amps, and electric current featured in the Volts. Considering that keyboards use USB as a source of power and that the maximum value they bring is 5V, the calculation will be much easier using Ohm's law.
Power = Thickness x Voltage // P = A x V
How much does the keyboard cost per RGB and without it
These are the measurements we made. Keep in mind that having only one place is completely wrong, but it gives us an idea of how to use the service. The experiment, by the way, was done with all the white lightning.
Thickness (A) | Voltage (V) | Usage (W) | |
---|---|---|---|
100% Light | 0.9 A | 5V | 4.5 W |
75% of light | 0.9 A | 4.9 V | 4.41 W |
50% of light | 0.8 A | 4.9 V | 3.92 W |
25% Light | 0.7 A | 5V | 3.5 W |
The light is off | 0.7 A | 4.9 V | 3.43 W |
Here we can see that the difference between RGB keyboard illumination at 100% light intensity or off is more than one watt, and we can see that The electrical consumption of the RGB gaming keyboard is about 4.5 watts, nothing disappoints all that is said.
With this data, we will calculate what this would cost us mentally if the keyboard is 24 x 7, considering the price of kWh of 0.14 euros with the input tax.
- With RGB at (4.5W), it is equivalent to 0.108 kWh, 0,15512 euros per day, or 0.45 euros per month.
- With RGB off (3.43W), they are equivalent to 0.08232 kWh, 0,0115 euros a day, or 34.3 euros a month.
So the difference is, between being fully illuminated or paralyzed on a gaming keyboard like ours for example it makes a difference of about 11 cents a month, and the fact that having a peripheral for 24 hours a day, is something that not everyone does, so the fact is that the money difference is so small, it's almost ignored.
Although it is assumed that these figures are not 100% accurate, they serve to give us an idea of what the design is and what the cost of both of us is, deciding how to tell the difference so small that it is almost undesirable. In short, you don't need to turn off the RGB lighting of your keyboard if your concerns are using too much Money for electricity
