Listening to music or getting higher quality audio while using Netflix on your Chromebook is easy to do with headphones. But if you don’t fancy getting tangled up in wires, Bluetooth headphones like Apple’s AirPods are a great option.
Here’s how to connect AirPods (or other Bluetooth headphones) to your Chromebook.
Can all Bluetooth headsets be used with a Chromebook?
Yes, if they use Bluetooth to establish a connection with a device, they will work perfectly with Chromebooks. However, some features may not work, especially if you have AirPods.
For example, it won’t be possible to control Siri, since Apple’s digital assistant resides on the iPhone and communicates with the AirPods, rather than being “in” the headphones themselves.
You also won’t be able to do the following:
- The ability to customize what corresponds to a double tap
- The ability to easily check the battery level
- spatialized audio
AirPods can be paired with multiple devices (partly thanks to iCloud), but they can only handle one active Bluetooth connection at a time. So make sure they’re not connected to your iPhone (or Android phone) when trying to set them up on your Chromebook, as this could cause issues.
The easiest way to test it is to turn off Bluetooth on your phone while following the steps below to connect them to your Chrome laptop.
How to Connect AirPods and Other Bluetooth Headphones to a Chromebook
Connecting your wireless headphones to a Chromebook is very simple. This is what you must do.
1. Click the time that appears in the lower right corner of your Chromebook.
2. In the menu that appears, click the Bluetooth icon to turn it on, then click the down arrow to open Bluetooth settings.
3. Open your AirPods case or press the pairing button.
4. You should see the headset appear in the list of Bluetooth devices detected by your Chromebook.
5. ChromeOS will automatically connect your headphones and you’ll see a message letting you know this happened. (We didn’t have AirPods on hand for this tutorial, but the process is the same.)
To disconnect the AirPods from your Chromebook, go back to Bluetooth settings and click the gear icon for “Settings” in the upper right corner of the window.
You will reach the main “Settings” page, where you will see that the Bluetooth headphones appear as connected. To the right of their name, click on the three dots and select “Disconnect”.
