If you’ve seen people sharing stacked emojis on a TikTok, you may have wondered how exactly they do it.
This article will give you step-by-step instructions for creating and sending them. We also have a clever WhatsApp emoji hack that you should try.
What are stacked emojis?
Very simply, stacked emojis are a way to group emojis together to create scenes or themes, which you can then send to anyone via iMessage.
Can I use stacked emojis on my phone?
Only if you have an iPhone. Stacked emojis are currently exclusive to Apple phones running a recent version of iOS, although this includes all models in our best iPhone roundup and many older models if you update them.
However, there is another problem: the sender can only see them if they also have an iPhone.
If the sender or recipient has an Android phone, you’re out of luck. There is no equivalent functionality for devices running Google’s operating system.
How to use stacked emojis
On the iPhone you want to send a stacked emoji from, here’s what to do:
1. Open iMessage
Unfortunately, this trick does not work on WhatsApp or other popular messaging apps. You can only do this on iMessage. Remember that you will need to send your emoji stacks to another iPhone user. If your correspondent is on Android, you go will be able to see the stacks you send them, but they will only see individual emojis.

2. Open a conversation
Next, open an iMessage conversation and send your first emoji. You can find and choose emojis by clicking the smiley face at the bottom left of your iPhone screen, just below the keyboard.

3. Choose your emojis
When the emoji appears in the main chat, you can start adding other emojis to the stack.
To do this, select an emoji and drag it onto the first one. This will allow you to create grouped images like this.

If you’re not happy with the placement of emojis, you can click on an emoji in the stack and drag it to a new location. Keep in mind that this may be a little more complicated than it seems.
4. Increase your emojis
But there is more ! You can choose to increase the size of your base emoji (or others you add later). To do this, long press on the emoji before dragging it into the message bar and it should appear in a much larger format. Once you send it to the conversation, you can then drag other emojis to join it.
