There are times in life when you need to warn people about something but you want to keep your identity hidden. This could be reporting the company you work for if you find something wrong, notifying the police of the crime, contacting people living under dictatorial regime, or any number of other situations.
Being able to send anonymous email is the safest way to ensure that you are not dragged into a dangerous situation. So how can you do it? We show you how to maintain your privacy when sending messages.
Send anonymous emails from a fake account
It may seem obvious, but one of the easiest ways to send anonymous email is to create and send it from a fake email account. In fact, lying is probably the wrong word here.
You can sign up with multiple email providers, such as Gmail, Yahoo, Zoho, Hotmail, and others, by providing details about the design. This account can be used to send messages to other people without being easily tracked.
Just make sure that when setting up your account, you do not provide phone numbers, usernames, or other information (such as recovery email addresses) that could lead to you.
For added security, you should also consider using a VPN to protect the ISP address of your home or work network from being stored on email providers’ servers.
Use a secure email provider
If you need more security, you can try one of the privacy-sensitive email services available. Some of our favorites are Tutanota and Protonmail.
What all this has in common is that they don’t need any personal information to create an account, everything you send is sent (so the company itself can’t read your emails), and IP addresses emails sent and received are all deleted.
This combination makes it a great, yet still easy way to use resources anonymously.
Send anonymous emails from disposable accounts
Those who want to leave as little track as possible can use a temporary, lost account to send timely emails. Services like Guerillamail make this easy, just as you have to go to the site, select the ‘Name’ tab and write your message. If you want, there is an option to paste documents and files up to a maximum size of 150 MB.
Although the account remains active once done, all emails are deleted after one hour and attachments are valid for 24 hours only.
One thing you should know, as there is no password or account access details, anyone who knows the address can visit Guerillamail and access it, which is why the short time the content stays on the site.
This is worth remembering if you want to get answers, as the account may be compromised if someone receives an address. That’s why it’s best to send some messages or tips, and then leave. Also, use a VPN while accessing the site for added security.
