Adobe’s Photoshop program is one of the most famous photo editing applications of all time. It offers a wide range of editing features that very few programs can guarantee, especially when using a Creative Cloud subscription.
However, the full version of Photoshop is one of the most demanding applications for computers, which is reflected in the fact that it is available only for computers with desktop operating systems, as well as for iPadOS.
What if you want to use Photoshop on an Android phone or other device? Fortunately, Adobe offers a simplified version for mobile devices, known as Adobe Photoshop Express.
What is Photoshop Express?
In a nutshell, Photoshop Express is the version of Photoshop developed by Adobe and intended for phones and other mobile devices such as tablets. In addition to being optimized for touch operation, it is designed for sharing images over the network.
However, it’s more than just a quick editing tool for Instagram or other social networks: Photoshop Express has many features that make it a powerful photo-editing app for your handheld device.
How to get started with Photoshop Express
- On your Android device, open the Google Play Store
- Search for “Photoshop” and click on “Photoshop Express Photo Editor”. This is usually the first result that appears.
- Tap “Install” and then open the app once it’s finished.
- When you first open the application, the program will show you an overview of the main features of Photoshop Express. Press “Next” ten times to move to the next section.
- If you already have an Adobe ID, use it to sign in on the next screen. Otherwise, you can also use a Google or Facebook account to log in.
- Click ‘Continue’ to accept the settings cookiesthen “Accept” and “Allow” to authorize the application to access your files and photos.
You will then see all your photos displayed in a grid. This will show up every time you open the app from now on, along with the latest photos added to your albums.
Are Photoshop Express free?
As you may have seen by following the steps above, it costs nothing to download the app and log in with your data. In fact, most of the features you’ll find in Photoshop Express are completely free.
In general, they allow you to cover all the basic aspects you expect from photo editing software:
- apply filters
- crop photos
- Resize photos
- correct point of view
- Adjust exposure, contrast, colors, saturation, clarity, highlights and more in photos
- add text
- fix red eyes
- add borders
- Remove blemishes such as smudges, dirt or dust.
- Apply auto boost
- Add watermark

You can learn more about all the features available in Photoshop Express on Adobe’s website.
However, there are a few additional features that you will have to pay for:
- Advanced Repair – This lets you quickly remove or clone part of an image, which can be used to smooth out imperfections without making the photo look unnatural.
- Selective editing: This allows you to isolate a specific part of the image (like the foreground subject) and edit it independently from the rest of the image.
- Raw Photo Editing: As the name suggests, you can also edit photos in RAW format, allowing you to retain and preserve the details of the original photo.
Other features exclusive to the Premium plan include integration with
If none of the above works for you, the free plan will probably be enough for your needs.
How much does Photoshop Express Premium cost?
Here it must be said that a Premium subscription can be interesting because it is much more affordable than the desktop version. After a three-day free trial, a year of Premium will cost you $34.99 / $36.99, which equals $2.92 / $2.20 per month.
So you’ll pay $4.99 for a month of access, but there’s no free trial with this plan.
On Android, the easiest way to pay is through the store Google Play Store. You can cancel at any time and you will only be charged until the end of the billing period you signed up for.
What are the differences between Photoshop Express and Photoshop Full?
As you may have noticed, the features included in Photoshop Express don’t cover all the functionality you’ll find in the desktop version of Photoshop. In the official adobe item where the two are compared, highlights two key scenarios where the full version is required.
The first is Layers, which allows you to make large changes to one element of an image, without affecting the rest. For double exposure photos, compositions, photomontages and some landscape images, layers are crucial.
At a more basic level, this is what we use to put screenshots into image templates and make them expandable to all photos. The Selective Editing feature in Photoshop Express simply doesn’t offer the same level of control.
Its other key advantage is what Adobe calls interoperability. Essentially, the desktop version of Photoshop can pull information from other Creative Cloud apps, whether it’s the background from a Premiere Pro video or the color scheme from an InDesign magazine. This is simply not possible in the mobile version.
While Photoshop Express is designed to enable photo editing on smartphones, you can easily import edits into Photoshop or Lightroom for more professional and advanced editing.
