Google seems to be diligently searching for new words to put in front of the verb “Search.” Earlier this year, the company launched Circle to Search, and now the company’s music streaming service, YouTube Music, has the new “Hum to Search” search feature.
The new search function works exactly as the name suggests: just tap the search icon, tap the waveform or equalizer icon to the right of the microphone, then start humming (or singing or whistling). YouTube Music will search for the song and provide options to play it or add it to a playlist.
In our initial testing, the functionality was a bit hit and miss with the buzzing alone, although this may have been user error.
The new search function is currently rolling out to the Android version of music streaming service YouTube Music; it’s unclear when it will come to other platforms. A similar feature was launched for Google’s regular search engine in 2020.
