Google didn’t spend any time talking about Android or teasing the Pixels at this year’s annual I/O developer conference.
Instead, the entire keynote was devoted to its AI efforts, primarily through Google Gemini; the multimodal LLM (large language model) it launched in late 2023 and is now available to users on a myriad of platforms, provided you’re in a country where it’s available.
How to get Google Gemini on your phone
If you live in a country where the app is available, you can download it for free from the Google Play Store. Note, however, that the free subscription is not available in some regions, so you will have to pay £18.99/$19.99 per month if you want to use the app.
To download it, simply go to the Play Store and search for “Google Gemini” and then tap “Install” next to the corresponding result. It’s only 1.46 MB, so it won’t take you much time.
How to get back to Google Assistant
If you want access to Google Assistant-specific features like Routines, prefer the interface and user experience, or simply don’t like the on-device nature of Gemini, it’s easy to switch back. Here’s how:
- Open the Google Gemini application.
- Press your Google Account Profile Icon in the upper corner of the screen.
- Faucet Settings.
- Press on “Google’s digital assistants” at the bottom of the Gemini settings list.
- Tap Google Assistant
- Faucet ‘To change’ in the following pop-up prompt.
- You will be redirected to your device’s home screen with Google Assistant restored.
How to Access Google Gemini on iPhone
Currently, there’s no easy way to get Google Gemini in Google’s iOS app if you’re not in a supported market, but you can at least create a web app shortcut on your home screen.
- Go to gemini.google.com on your iPhone’s web browser.
- Once loaded (also make sure you are logged in with your Google account), tap on iOS’ share icon.
- On the next share card, scroll down until you find “Add to Home Screen” and press it.
- You can then change the name of the shortcut, before by pressing “Add” in the corner of the screen.
- A shortcut to the Google Gemini web app will then appear on your iPhone’s home screen.
It’s worth noting that the ways in which users interact with Gemini will undoubtedly evolve over time. Google will look to more tightly integrate the experience on Android, and it’s quite likely that the Google app on iOS will simply be replaced by a standalone Gemini app, but for now the company seems more busy developing its AI efforts than making sure EU regulators are happy.
