One of the advantages of mechanical keyboards is that we can remove the caps from the keys to wash them. Which not only allows us to easily clean it from dirt, for which we recommend a portable handheld vacuum cleaner. However, often the problem arises when we have already placed all the keys and it is that suddenly we see how the keys are released, preventing us from writing well and easily. Do you have loose keys on your mechanical keyboard? Well, we will tell you how to fix the problem.
Those of you who have become accustomed to using mechanical keyboards will know that they have a number of advantages over membrane keyboards. One of them is its ease of cleaning and maintenance. Sometimes when we are typing, we inadvertently pick up one or more of the keycaps with our fingers. It’s extremely annoying, because we have to stop and reposition them all the time. And things get worse if we have to write quickly. However, it is a problem that has a solution.
How to avoid the loose key problem?
The reason this happens is because they aren’t placed far enough on everyone’s mechanical switch. For this reason, it is important that when putting it back on, we press with two fingers on the cap once we have placed it. However, sometimes it happens that even after doing it, there is still a loose key. What you have to do first is simple, put the keyboard upside down, shake it a bit and you will see how the ones that are not well placed will fall out, once done, put them back and repeat the operation until there are none left.
If after that it keeps happening to you, then you should look for other methods, don’t worry, we will explain them to you below.
Consider renewing the caps of the keys for better
If you see that the loose key is still the same, then you should think about the possibility that your keycap is faulty. It’s always good to have a full set to replace the keys in case they get erased or there are faulty ones. What can happen, in addition, you can take advantage of it to further customize your keyboard and give it a unique look. Sure, you may find that your keyboard brand uses proprietary switches and doesn’t officially sell spare parts, but with a bit of luck and looking on AliExpress or Amazon you might find something.
Avoid the use of modeling glue
Don’t even think about using modeling glue for plastic, as this will melt the plastic and may end up sticking to the mechanical switch below. We’ve heard of people doing this and killing the keyboard in the process. In addition, the problem is that afterwards you will not be able to disassemble said key to clean it.
Cheapest solution if you have a loose key
The best thing to do is grab one of the wall painting tapes to do the following:
-
- Cut very thin strips 1 mm thick.
- Place these strips half-pressed into the gap at the bottom of the loose key cap with the adhesive side facing the switch. To prevent the sweat from your hands from damaging the tail of the tape, we recommend using tweezers.
- Snap the key into position, this will give an extra hook that will prevent the key from coming loose.
The advantage of this method is that you can then safely use the Keypuller to remove the key together with the rest and clean the keyboard as usual. Of course, you’ll have to repeat the process each time you clean the keyboard.
Upgrade your mechanical keyboard
If you are not satisfied with everything we have offered, then you may want to consider making some upgrades to your mechanical keyboard to increase its performance and support. In any case, if none of this works, we recommend that you completely change your keyboard and buy a new one.
