The latest film in the Mad Max saga is now premiering in American and British cinemas. Before diving into the thrilling story of Furiosa, learn more about George Miller’s violent post-apocalyptic universe, centered on ex-cop Max Rockatansky.
Launched in 1979, Mad Max was from the start a dark and violent story with a mythical atmosphere and a healthy dose of camp. The depiction of a civilization destroyed first by an oil crisis, then by nuclear war and struggles over water is both powerful and deeply disturbing.
The Mad Max universe’s vision of post-nuclear wastelands and bizarre characters has undoubtedly had an impact on pop culture. For example, he inspired the creators of the Fallout games, recently adapted into the Fallout series on Prime Video.

What are the Mad Max movies?
Mad Max (1979)
The film, set in 1985, covers the events leading up to the nuclear conflict. After the Gulf War, the world was gripped by an oil crisis. There are still stores and police officers (Max, played by Mel Gibson, is a young cop), but gas runs out and armed gangs appear. The film doesn’t yet feature the steamy wastelands; the action takes place on the Australian coast, covered with grass and trees.
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
The film takes place around 1988, three years after the events of the first part. According to one theory, a nuclear war has already swept the world; according to the other, this has not yet happened. With Max we head into the Australian wilderness, the first warlords appear and the few settlers try to survive.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
The third part of Max’s adventures takes place 15 years after The Road Warrior, around 2003, but according to another theory – even later. Some time has passed since the nuclear war and the survivors are trying to rebuild civilization. Max finds himself in Bartertown, a town ruled with a firm hand by the entity Aunty, played by Tina Turner.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The film initiates a “new” series on Max, with Tom Hardy in the lead role. It is also the first film featuring Furiosa. The nuclear summer and vague memories of civilization suggest that decades have passed since the apocalypse. So the action could take place around 2050. On the other hand, Max appears to be between 30 and 40 years old, which means the action could also take place in the first decade of the 21st century.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Set decades before Fury Road, the film tells the story of the warrior featured in the 2015 film. Young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, seeks revenge on a Dementus warlord, who kidnapped as a child, and joins forces with unlikely allies.
The film is currently available exclusively in cinemas.
