Fortnite has always allowed you to communicate with your teammates and other players through headsets, but thanks to a collaboration with the Houseparty app, it now lets you go further and video chat while you play.
For now, this only works on PC, PS4, and PS5, and you’ll need to have your cell phone handy while you play. Here’s how to take advantage of this new feature.
What you need to chat in Fortnite by video
As we mentioned before, the first thing to keep in mind is that you need to play with a PC, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. It is possible that other platforms will adopt the function, but for now , you can only do it with those indicated.
You should also have your Android or iOS phone or tablet with the app Household installed.
You can use a bluetooth wireless headset or a gaming headset if you want to improve the sound quality, but if not, you can just chat with your cell phone’s microphone and speakers as you normally would.
Here we show you a ranking of the best headphones of the year with which you can better enjoy this function or combine it with listening to music or making calls.
How to start video chat in Fortnite
First, you need to open the Houseparty app on iOS or Android and connect it to Fortnite through your Epic Games account. You can find the connection option through “Settings” or the TV icon.
As a benefit of connecting your accounts, you will get the free Rainbow Fot Wrap given to your Fortnite account.
Once the accounts are connected, open Fortnite on your PC or PlayStation console and have your phone or tablet handy; make sure you are in a stable position where the camera selfie can see your face completely. You may need to support him somewhere.
Then you will need to join your friends in the Houseparty app as usual, and once you do, your videos will appear in the game on the left side and you can continue chatting while playing.
You can also focus the faces to appear in the video, or insert a background with the Fortnite theme.
Fortnite video chat security features
Since Fortnite has a large following of young gamers, Epic and Houseparty have teamed up to include additional security features.
First of all, keep in mind that Houseparty itself is designed for people over the age of 13, and you need to be that age to create an account.
Epic added a switch for the Houseparty video chat option in Fortnite’s parental controls, so worried parents can simply turn the option off completely if they don’t want their kids to use it.
The only people who can join a chat room are friends of people already present, which limits the size of a group.
At any time, party members can also tap the lock icon in the Houseparty group to prevent someone else from joining, and they can also unlock it at any time to let more people in.
It’s also easy to block specific people from the chat – just tag the person in the Houseparty app and select ‘Block’. In Fortnite, it is also possible to report a player’s behavior in “Reports / Comments” in “Settings”.
Will Fortnite video chat reach Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or mobile devices?
We do not know yet! All Epic has said so far is that the company will “let everyone know about the possibility of supporting more platforms in the future.”
It’s a bit uncertain, but unless Sony has signed an exclusivity deal for PlayStation, it seems unlikely that the option will ever appear on other platforms; maybe we need to be patient.
Of course, given that the game is no longer officially available on iPhone, and Apple and Epic are locked in an intense legal battle, video chat in Fortnite on iOS devices almost certainly won’t be coming anytime soon.
