After the first mid-season break in its history, the Premier League is back.
The competition was suspended for six weeks to host the Winter World Cup in Qatar, but its return coincides with a full program of festive fixtures. However, things aren’t as hectic as we’d usually see around Christmas and New Years.
But with 19 matches live in the UK between December 26 and January 5, there’s plenty to expect. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the Premier League live, including if you’re based elsewhere.

How to watch the Premier League on Sky Sports
You probably already know this, but Sky Sports is the main place to watch the Premier League in the UK.
Sky has its own dedicated league channel and you’ll also find plenty of games like Main Event and Showcase. Throughout the season, the broadcaster broadcasts a total of 128 live matches.
Packages start at £46 per month for 18 months, or from an additional £18 per month if you already have a Sky TV subscription. The latter only gives you access to Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Football – for all eight channels it’s an extra £20 per month for 18 months, then £27 per month.
Whichever option you choose, you will also have access on your phone, tablet and/or laptop via Sky Go. See all options on the Sky website.
However, if you sign up to Sky Q with a Sky Sports package, you can also watch in HDR quality. Learn more in our separate guide: How to get HDR on Sky Q
How to watch the Premier League on Now
If you don’t want to commit to a Sky contract and a satellite dish on your house, that’s no problem. Sky has its Now streaming service as an alternative option, and there are no restrictions on what content you can access.
Now is available on a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, Chromecast, and even game consoles.
A day pass offers 24 hours of access and costs £11.99 – ideal for one-off occasions. However, it will make much more sense to get the monthly pass if you plan to watch every weekend. It costs £33.99 per month and includes a week of free Now Boost.
The latter adds 1080p video and Dolby 5.1 surround sound, removes ads, and lets you stream to three devices at the same time (instead of the usual two). After that, it will cost you an additional £5 per month.

How to watch the Premier League on BT Sport
Your secondary place for Premier League action after Sky is BT Sport. This season, there are a total of 52 live matches available.
There are several options to sign up for BT Sport, first of all by combining it with BT Broadband. Put your postal code on the site to see what offers are available.
On the On the TV side, prices start at £17 per month for the duration of a 24-month contract. In exchange, you’ll get all BT Sport and BoxNation channels, plus Freeview, AMC and a recordable TV box.
If you have BT broadband you can also use the BT Sport app for £16 a month – it works on mobile, tablet, smart TV and console – or buy the monthly pass for £25 per month. If your device supports it, you’ll still be able to watch in up to 4K HDR quality. Sky customers can add BT Sport from £29.99 per month with £35 upfront.
How to watch the Premier League on Amazon Prime Video
Over the past two years, Amazon has gradually increased the amount of sports shown on its Prime Video streaming service. While tennis remains the main sport, there are 20 Premier League matches available this season.
When they are (check the schedule above), you can watch via web browser or use the Prime Video app on a wide range of devices to tune in.
If you are already an Amazon Prime member, you have access to Prime Video included in your membership. It currently costs $14.99/£8.99 per month or $139/£95 per year, but there are plenty of other benefits.
New customers can take advantage of a 30-day free trial. Sign up via the Amazon website, although you’ll need a VPN to access football if your account if you’re based outside the UK. It is not available in the United States or elsewhere.
Can I watch the Premier League for free?
Not live, provided you are based in the UK. The BBC had a few live matches during pandemic-hit seasons, but that is no longer the case.
That means you’ll have to stick with highlights, but there are plenty of places to catch up on games. The most obvious is Match of the Day, the BBC’s flagship programme. It usually airs on Saturday and Sunday evenings, as well as midweek when there is a full series of matches. It’s available live on BBC One or via BBC iPlayer, although you need a TV license.
However, if you’d rather not listen to the pundits’ or managers’ interviews, Sky Sports upload highlights from every match (including those they don’t show) to their YouTube channel.
Clips are also regularly posted on Twitter, in particular for @btsportfootball and @SkySportsPL.
How to watch the Premier League outside the UK
Before trying to watch UK TV from abroad, it’s worth checking which broadcaster has the rights to the Premier League where you’re based. For example, it’s NBC in the United States, Optus Sport in Australia and Canal+ in France.
However, if you’re just visiting another country, it makes sense to access your UK-based subscription.
Until the end of 2020, it was quite easy for UK viewers to watch TV outside the UK when traveling to another EEA member state. Providers had to allow customers to view content by law, but Brexit means that is no longer the case.
You will now need to use a VPN (virtual private network) to set your location to the UK in order to unlock the content. The same goes for American viewers who want to watch the Premier League beyond what’s shown on American networks.
Our choice is NordVPNwhich is also at the top of our overall ranking best VPN summary because of its ease of use, security features and excellent value for money.
