Update: On June 18 at around 11pm UK time, reports of Virgin Media not working started to appear. Downdetector suggests many places in the UK are affected, with hotspots in London, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. However, some areas appear to be unaffected and functioning as normal.
The most commonly reported issue is problems accessing email, but many report loss of internet or slower than usual connections. As of this writing, Virgin has yet to officially admit wrongdoing. The usual article follows below.
With millions of people across the UK relying on internet services every day, the demand on the infrastructure that provides them is very high. It also means that there is a very real possibility of failures occurring.
These days, your broadband connection is arguably as important as any other home utility, so losing access due to technical issues can be a serious headache. Virgin is one of the main providers of both in the UK, so when it does run into trouble the effects can be widespread. Luckily, there are several ways to check if the problem is with the service itself or with your own hardware.
If you decide it might be better to switch to a new provider, be sure to check out our guide to the best broadband deals to see what’s on offer.
Is Virgin Media down in my area?
If you’re having trouble connecting to your home broadband connection, here are some ways to figure out the problem. First, take a look at your router to see if there are any flashing lights indicating a problem. To be sure, you can even try restarting it to see if that restores your connection.
To check the status of the Virgin network, you will, ironically, need an internet connection of some sort. Hopefully the 4G service on your smartphone is still working, otherwise you may need to call a friend or go to the nearest free WiFi hotspot.
When you log in, go to the Virgin Media Service Status page, enter your postcode and you will be notified of any current issues.
To check, you can also use one of the many third-party status checkers, such as Is It Down Right Now, Is It Down Or Just Me, or Down Detector.
Is Virgin Mobile down?
As with broadband service, checking for issues with Virgin’s mobile network can be done via the Virgin Service Status page. Additionally, you can also check out the third-party sites listed in the previous section.
How do I contact Virgin?
Once you discover a problem with your service, the best thing to do is report it to Virgin immediately. This can be done via the customer services line on 0345 454 1111 or by calling 150 on your Virgin Mobile phone. The call center operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
There is also a text relay service available free of charge on 18001 0800 052 2164, as well as the option of using a sign language interpreter.
If that doesn’t give you the answers you need, often the official email
Virgin Media Twitter account may be another way to solve the problem.
