You most likely have Steam installed on your computer, come on, any video game fan has the Valve store. Inside there is a huge amount of non-active hidden functions. Many of these functions can be useful on some occasions and on others it would be nice to have them always active.
We will tell you how to activate one of the best functions of this digital store. We are going to explain to you how to activate the FPS counter integrated in Steam. Thus, you will be able to see how the game works without the need for other tools.
Integrated FPS counter in Steam
In fact, this function is not exactly new, but it is “forgotten”. Few people know it exists and other tools are often used. Windows includes the Xbox Game Bar which already offers this possibility. If you have an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, with both brands’ own software, you can also see it.
We want to teach you how to activate the FPS counter with Steam, which is simple. You need to follow these steps:
- As usual, you must first open steam in windowed mode
- NOW, click steam at the top left of the top bar
- Let’s go to the option settings in the drop-down menu
- A panel opens where there are different options and we will look in the left column for the option At the beginning
- We will see that inside there are many options in steam interfacebut those of interest are:
- FPS Counter: it is disabled and has a drop-down menu that tells us where we want to place it. Everyone who places it where it interests them the most
- High contrast in-game FPS counter: This option is designed so that the color adapts according to the game and it is seen very well in a simple way
- Once this option is selected, we close the window and launch the game we want
It must be said that this option has a big drawback and that is that its activation is permanent. This means that there is no key combination to turn it off or on. So if it stresses you out or bothers you, better not turn it on. You can activate it when you buy a new game to optimize it well and get the most out of it.
Removable FPS counter
The steam meter is fixed and it can be annoying. Ideally it would have an option to show and hide at the user’s will, but that’s not the case. So if you don’t want to have it all the time or your favorite game isn’t on Steam, you have Xbox Game Bar.
Anyone with Windows 10 or later versions of Microsoft’s operating system has access. The truth is that it is a very complete function that eliminates the need for third-party software. In addition, it is more complete than previously mentioned, since it allows to see the use of processing, graphics card, VRAM and RAM, as well as FPS.
It is activated as follows:
- To access it, just press the Windows + G icon on our keyboard at the same time (if this does not work for you, check that you have not blocked the Windows key)
- The bar will appear and among all the boxes the one that says Performance. If it does not appear, in the top bar you will see the icon of a screen, click on it and it will appear
- To keep it fixed, you just have to click on the chincheta so that it is always displayed
- Before closing the game bar, you can move it around the screen and place it wherever you want without limits
- Also, you can compact it so that the graphic is removed and it is much smaller and more unobtrusive
- If you now want to close it, just press Windows + G, deselect the pin and exit the game bar and it will “disappear”.
I have to say, from my point of view, the one on Steam is poor and you can’t hide it at will, I don’t like that. The Xbox Game Bar gives a lot more information, being able to better detect if something isn’t working as it should.
