The David Mitchell-led crime series Ludwig has grown in popularity over its six-episode run, attracting 9.5 million viewers in 28 days. Its weekly audience even challenged major TV hits like The Great British Bake Off.
If you’ve been fascinated by the adventures of John “Ludwig” Taylor and the mysterious disappearance of his identical twin James, then you may be wondering if there are more series to come. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Is Ludwig returning for a second season?
Isn’t that obvious? After an exceptional reception from audiences and critics, Ludwig will return for a second season – this is confirmed directly by the BBC.
Show star David Mitchell issued the following statement: “I am delighted that John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor has failed to escape the clutches of Cambridge Police and must continue to face the alarming crime wave in the city. »
When could Ludwig season 2 be released?
Although the BBC hasn’t officially confirmed when Ludwig season 2 will hit screens, the fact that it was given the green light so quickly could mean that production will begin soon.
Filming for the first season began in January 2023, and the series hit screens for the first time at the end of September. If the scripts are already written (or in development), then season 2 could follow a similar pattern.
This would indicate that we could see the release of Ludwig season 2 in Fall 2025.
Ludwig season 2 cast: Who will return?

- Dipo Ola as DI Russell Carter
- Gerran Howell as DC Simon Evans
- Izuka Hoyle as DS Alice Finch

One person we probably won’t see again is Sophie Willan as Holly Pinder – more on that in our Spoiler-filled plot speculation below.
What happened at the end of Ludwig season 1?
In the season 1 finale, John managed to convince the police to drop wrongful murder charges against Lucy, in his typical orthodox fashion, after cyber expert Holly Pinder was found dead in her apartment and Lucy was caught holding the murder weapon.
Lucy was there because John thought Holly had figured out who he was and turned up right after she was killed – allowing the real murderer to plant the knife on Lucy – something John recreated in spectacular fashion, forcing the killer to confess. The killer turned out to be an accomplice of Holly’s, who was helping her sell confidential police files and evidence.
However, in doing so, he also had to reveal his true identity and admit that he had pretended to be his twin to find out what had happened to him.
Despite his lies, the team was extremely impressed by the number of cases he had solved and offered him the role of police consultant. Although he initially turned it down, he eventually agreed – so we expect to see more complex mysteries thrown at him in season 2.
And then, of course, there remains the mystery of James. To the rest of the world, he had left a voicemail that made it sound like he had just left his family. However, John managed to figure out her code and, along with Lucy and her nephew Henry, found a storage unit containing missing files belonging to the now-deceased journalist (and conspiracy theorist) Roger Sinclair, which Holly had sold to him .
Unbeknownst to them, the twin was watching from the shadows. These files could lead to something incriminating for other officers, especially Police Chief Ziegler, who seemed to be hiding something throughout the series. The question is, how far does this corruption extend? Can John really trust anyone?
