After ending support for the third-generation Apple TV, Netflix has confirmed that it will also end full support for older iPhones and iPads.
Models such as the iPhone X and first-generation iPad Pro cannot be updated to iOS 17 and therefore will not be guaranteed to receive updates to the latest version of Netflix, according to the Powerpage website.
“We’ve updated the Netflix app! To use the latest version, please update to iOS 17 or later,” reads a message displayed to users using iOS 16.
For now, if you are affected, you can ignore the message and continue using the app, but it is possible that it may stop working in the future.
The Verge reached out to Netflix for comment and spokesperson MoMo Zhou confirmed that updates will only be pushed to these devices if absolutely necessary. Originally, media reports believed that the app would not be updated at all on iOS 16, but Netflix has since denied that claim.
The following devices cannot be updated to iOS 17, so if you own one of these, you may be affected:
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPad 5 (2017)
- iPad Pro (1st generation)
