Nintendo has a zero tolerance policy towards anyone who infringes on their intellectual property. We have seen in recent years how they have launched all sorts of legal actions against those who create emulators of their consoles or other hacking tools.
It is also common to take legal action against those who imitate or copy their intellectual property. Usually, all of these actions are usually carried out by the company and very high penalties are imposed, to prevent others from also taking actions that threaten the company’s assets.
Finally, Nintendo takes on Palworld
For months, there has been speculation about some sort of non-aggression pact between the two companies. The truth is that there has always been some tension, especially with the comments of the Japanese company’s executives when questioned about this game.
Nintendo just announced something we all saw coming, a lawsuit against Pair of pocket, creators of the game Pallurold. THE request was presented by a patent infringement before the Tokyo District Court on September 18, 2024. The lawsuit seeks an injunction for infringement and damages for violation of several patents.
The similarities between the Palworld creatures “Paldies” and Pokémon are quite obvious. So much so that many call this game “Pokémon with guns”. Even the developers of this title have sometimes remarked that it contains all of the things they wish were in Pokémon games.
In reality, the only surprising thing is that the lawsuits took this long to arrive. It’s worth noting that shortly after the game’s launch, Nintendo had already announced that it was investigating the game.
It’s worth noting that Nintendo has had some run-ins with PocketPair before. Months ago, it managed to have many modifications that added Pokémon and other elements of the Nintendo franchise to the game removed.
For now and until there is a court decision, the game can continue to be purchased on Steam without any problems. After the failure, depending on the outcome, it is possible that Valve will remove it from its store and even prevent users who paid for a copy from playing it.
We have seen in the past how Nintendo has sent letters to various developers who have created games similar to theirs, asking for a halt to development. Those who ignored the issue have found themselves facing serious legal problems.
After so much time and relative calm, it seemed that the start of legal proceedings was not going to come. The truth is that there are dozens of Pokémon that look incredibly similar, such as Wololo, which is there right after starting the game, or Electraburuzz. Although the game has many different elements, such as the ability to create your shelter, there is no “Professor” to guide you as well as other mechanics, such as cutting down trees or grinding stones.
