After a prolonged silence, news about the second season of One Piece is finally coming. Several actors have just joined the cast of the pirate saga, and they will play vicious criminals and pirates.
In the past, Netflix hasn’t had much luck with live-action anime adaptations. The infamous 2017 film Death Note was criticized and the Cowboy Bebop series was canceled after just one season. However, one production bucks the trend.
One Piece, a live-action series based on a manga by Eiichirō Oda, was surprisingly successful. According to the Netflix website, the series was viewed up to 18.5 million times in the first weekend after its premiere.
The secret to success lies in maintaining the spirit of the original along with excellent casting, inventive set design and excellent CGI. It’s no wonder why fans are eagerly waiting for the next episode of the series. Here’s everything you need to know about One Piece season two.
Potential One Piece Season 2 Release Date
Netflix has officially renewed One Piece for a second season. Take a look at the official announcement below, which also confirms that Tony Tony Chopper will be joining the crew next season:
The series’ producers, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, told Variety that the scripts were ready, but they could not continue until the SAG-AFTRA strike was resolved. If the studios reach an agreement, the two men estimate that it will take between 12 and 18 months for the series to be broadcast.
This is a similar timeline to Season 1. Production began in January 2022 and wrapped in August of that year, but the series debuted on Netflix a year later. Based on all this information, we won’t see One Piece season 2 until 2025 or later.
One Piece Season 2 Plot
Eiichirō Oda’s manga is one of the most complete Japanese series: it includes more than 1,000 chapters, compiled into 106 volumes. In the series’ first season, Netflix only adapted 95 chapters, meaning there’s still a lot of comedic material for the showrunners to cover.
Season 1 covering crew training, setting common goals, and fighting with the Marines. In season 2, it is likely that the serious treasure hunt will begin, since the Straw Hat Pirates have decided to travel to the Grand Line. The journey will probably not be peaceful: the crew must cross a strip of sea called the Calm Belt, populated by giant beasts.
Additionally, young pirates will likely still be hunted by Vice Admiral Garp and the Marines. The Straw Hat Pirates may have to do battle with the sinister organization Baroque Works. As you may remember, Roronoa Zoro killed one of his members in the first episode of the series.
It’s also possible that in Season 2 we’ll meet old enemies again, like Captain Alvida and Buggy the Clown.
