Oppo is battling Samsung with the Find N2 Flip, a foldable clamshell phone that’s clearly designed as a direct competitor to the wildly popular Galaxy Z Flip 4.
And for the first time with any of Oppo’s foldables, this fight won’t be limited to China, as Oppo has confirmed that the Find N2 Flip will launch in Europe this month. Bring it on.
Here’s everything we know so far about the Oppo Find N2 Flip.
When will the Oppo Find N2 Flip be released globally?
Oppo unveiled the Find N2 Flip on day two of its Inno Day 2022 event (the same event where it previously launched the first Find N) on December 15, giving it a China launch at the same time.
The company has now confirmed that the flip phone will get a global launch on February 15although it is unlikely to reach the United States.
The launch event will kick off in London at 2.30pm GMT – so 9.30am ET and 6.30am PT – and will see the company reveal “global availability, colors and pricing” for the phone. Tech Advisor will be there in person to cover the launch as it happens.
The Find N2 Flip launched in China alongside the book-style Find N2, but oddly This the phone is not currently set to launch internationally. We also expect the traditional Oppo Find X6 flagship phones to launch soon, but it looks like that will be after the Flip arrives in Europe.
How much does the Find N2 Flip cost?
At the moment, we only have the Chinese price for the Find N2 Flip, where it starts from ¥5,999 (about $860 / £700).
That sounds cheap for a foldable, but keep in mind that Chinese prices tend to be lower than their western equivalents, and in reality we’d expect to see the phone priced similarly to other phones at current clamshell such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, Motorola. Razr 2022 and Huawei P50 Pocket, priced as follows:
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: From $999/£999/$1,099
- Motorola Razr 2022: from £949/$1,199 (around $1,150)
- Huawei P50 Pocket: from $1,299 (around $1,389/£1,100)
What are the specifications and design of the Find N2 Flip?
From the outside, there are a few things about the Find N2 Flip that immediately stand out, especially compared to rivals like the Z Flip 4 and the Razr.
The biggest is the cover screen, which is not only the biggest around 3.26 inches, but is also laid out in a vertical and portrait orientation. Don’t worry, it’s not like the cover screens on big foldables – you’re not supposed to use it to navigate the normal Android interface – but Oppo says the portrait layout makes it better suited to use as a camera viewfinder, and more natural for reading notifications and alerts.
Otherwise, the Find N2 Flip is quite similar in size and shape to the Samsung flip phone, with a similar blocky design. It’s even basically the same weight, at 191g compared to 187g for the Z Flip 4. It launched in black, gold and purple finishes in China, although we don’t know if all of these finishes will go global or not. .
Oppo
The Flip uses the same 2nd-gen Flexion hinge as the regular Find N2, which Oppo says should last 400,000 folds – enough for 200 a day for five years. One downside is that, unlike rival Samsung, there’s no IP rating – although Oppo claims the phone should still be able to be used in the rain.
The internal display is a 6.8-inch screen (again…similar to Samsung), with a 120Hz AMOLED panel, so it should offer decent quality.
As for the chipset, there’s a bit of a surprise here. The Find N2 Flip is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ – not the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 found in the regular Find N2, or the more recent Dimensity 9200 launched in November 2022. Oppo says it worked with MediaTek on a version Customization of the chip with improved power efficiency, which should help alleviate battery issues caused by the form factor.
RAM is increased from 8 GB to 16 GB, while storage is 256 GB or 512 GB.
Speaking of which, the phone has a 4,300mAh battery (larger than Samsung’s 3,700mAh), so either way, this seems like an all-day phone. The 44W wired charging should top it up quickly too, although it’s a shame there’s no wireless charging option.
When it comes to cameras, Oppo has prioritized the main camera, with a 50Mp shooter using the IMX890 sensor – the same main camera it uses in the Find N2. That’s joined by an 8Mp ultrawide, plus a 32Mp punch-hole selfie camera on the internal display.
As for software, the phone will run Android 13 with Oppo’s ColorOS 13 on top.
